ICAO president commends aviation safety

The President of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Roberto Gonzalez, has applauded Ghana for its efficient handling of aviation safety and security issues. He said this when he called on Vice President Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur at the Flagstaff House in Accra.

According to Mr. Gonzalez, the country continues to see tremendous growth in the aviation industry due largely to the seriousness it attaches to upholding standards in the aviation sector. Mr. Roberto Gonzalez is in the country to participate in the 23rd plenary session of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) currently underway in Accra. The commission, which comprises 54 African States, is the specialised agency of the African Union responsible for Civil Aviation matters in Africa.

AFCAC facilitates cooperation and coordination among African states toward the development of integrated and sustainable Air Transport systems, fosters implementation of ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices, and the development of harmonised rules and regulations, consistent with the best international practices in civil aviation.

The Vice President for his part said Ghana will continue to effectively cooperate with the International Civil Aviation Organisation to provide quality, safe and secured air transportation for users across the country.

He said although the air transport has seen a significant growth over the years, Government will continue to commit more investment within the sector. He expressed confidence in the decision by government to allow the Ghana Airport Company to retain all Airport tax its makes, in order to bring in more expansion within the sector.
