Plantain packers in Asante Akyem Agogo in the Ashanti Region are earning up to GH¢800 a day by packing plantain for transport to markets across the country.
In a video posted on X and sighted by GhanaWeb Business on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the workers said they earn GH¢20 for every sack they pack, with some managing between 40 and 50 sacks a day. Their daily earnings depend on the number of sacks they complete.

One of the workers said the job could generate a good income despite its physical demands.
“We are able to pack 40–50 sacks every day, and each sack we fill costs GH¢20,” the worker said.
The work involves sorting and packing plantain, lifting heavy loads and preparing the produce for transport. Workers often spend long hours at loading grounds to meet their daily targets.
For some of the packers, the income has helped them acquire personal assets. One worker said he had saved enough from the job to buy a motorcycle, which he now uses for another income-generating activity.
Another worker said the earnings made the physically demanding work worthwhile.
“In a day, I can pack up to 40 to 50 sacks and get up to 800 cedis by the end of the day. It’s hard work, but when you look at what you take home, you know your sweat is not in vain,” the worker said.
The plantain trade in Agogo highlights the income opportunities available across Ghana’s agricultural value chain, including the packing, loading and transportation of produce.
It also shows how work outside formal office settings can provide a source of income and help some workers build assets.
