Government commissions recycling plant; 500 jobs created

Government has today commissioned Integrated Compost and Recycling Waste Plant (IRECOP) in Accra. The recycling plant will help improve the method of waste management in the country.

Minister for Business Development, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal who was speaking on behalf of the Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at the commissioning Friday was confident the recycling plant will help provide over 500 job opportunities for Ghanaians. According to him, the plant will also serve as a research facility for students in the universities.

“I am aware that this waste recycling plant has the potential to create more than 500 job opportunities along the value chain. Ones at the same time, offering students study and research experience for our universities the opportunity for practical learning.”

As part of the President’s efforts to achieve his vision of making Accra the cleanest city in West Africa before the end of his tenure in office, Mr. Awal noted that the president is determined to ensure policies in Ghana are developed for a successful achievement of the SDG Goals.

“As co-chair of the UN imminent Group of SDGs advocates, President Akufo-Addo is keen on ensuring that Ghana leads the way in achieving the SDG Goals through developing policies that promote sustainability.”

“An innovative 400 ton facility that employs the most modern technology recycle organic plastic and other waste into recycle raw materials, to feed agricultural and other industries. This will go a long way, to support government’s drive to promote agriculture through the planting of food and jobs and one district one factory programs”, this is said is in sync with government’s fulfillment of the One district One Factory project”.

The Business Development Minister hinted of the efforts government is putting in place to help the private sector attain the country’s economic transformation agenda.



“Government is fully aware, that our economic transformation agenda cannot be complete without the private investors assuming the central role in the mix.

We are more resolute to support the private sector, in acknowledgement to the fact that, a flourishing private sector means more job opportunities for the youth, increased tax revenue for government and ultimately a robust and prosperous economy.”

He however, commended Mr Joseph Siaw Agyepong, the Chairman of the Jospong Group of Company for demonstrating good leadership with his community.

“As government we are very mindful that ensuring sustainable waste management requires strong partnership between the government and the private sector interest. For this reason let me commend Zoomlion Ghana Limited through its executive chairman, Joseph Osei Agyepong and his central partners for demonstrating leadership within his community to boast rapid processing of various company.
