The Acting Minister of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST), Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has inaugurated a new Governing Board for the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), charging members to demonstrate integrity, foresight and dedication in steering the Commission towards advancing Ghana’s energy and scientific development.
The event, which took place on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at the Ministry’s conference room in Accra, brought together government officials, technocrats, heads of agencies and stakeholders in the energy and scientific community.
In his inaugural address, Buah emphasized the crucial role of the GAEC in Ghana’s nuclear power programme, noting that the country is steadily progressing towards the completion of Phase II of the programme and the eventual establishment of a nuclear power plant to diversify Ghana’s energy mix.
“The Board’s commitment to ensuring that the Commission meets international nuclear safety and regulatory standards is crucial as Ghana works closely with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to advance this ambitious national project,” he stated.
The Acting Minister also revealed that ongoing policy processes are under way to review the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission Act 2000 (Act 588).
He assured the new Board of his commitment to push the review through Cabinet and Parliament, stressing that the reforms would better position GAEC to deliver on its mandate.
“With a new Board, fresh ideas, expert advice and insights will be available to further enrich the document,” he added.
Buah expressed concern about the encroachment on GAEC’s lands, describing them as critical national assets hosting strategic research, training and nuclear facilities.
He urged the new Board to collaborate with the Ministry, local authorities, and other state agencies to protect these lands for the benefit of future generations.
The minister further charged the Board to strengthen research collaborations and promote innovation in the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology in health, agriculture, industry and environmental management.
“The President’s aspiration is clear: to build a self-reliant, technologically advanced, and energy-secure Ghana. GAEC, under your strategic leadership, will play a pivotal role in making this vision a reality,” he noted.
