Tema Police arrests alleged bank robber

Tema, April 19, GNA - The Tema Police have arrested John Gyasi, a 43 year-old trader, for his alleged involvement in last December's robbery of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) at Tema.

He has been placed in custody and would appear in court on May second, together with other accomplices, Frank Amegadzi and Baba Seidu, who were arrested earlier.

A police source said Amegadzi led the police to arrest Gyasi, alias Alhaji Burkina and Little John. The source said when his residence at Alajo in Accra was searched, nine million cedis, video deck, television sets and other electrical gadgets were found.

He could not explain the source of the money and the items. Baba Seidu had earlier been arrested in a police identification parade in Accra. Reports from the newspapers said early December last year, six armed robbers stole 73 million cedis from a bullion van at the Tema Community One Agency of the ADB.

The money was being conveyed from the Tema main office of the bank at the Tema Fishing Harbour. The robbers packed the money into an unnumbered Toyota Land Cruiser parked nearby and later abandoned the vehicle and bolted with their booty.

Days after the robbery, the Tema Police arrested a number of people in a dawn swoop, some of whom were identified as being connected with the bank robbery.
