Calls for the payment of content creators on the social media app TikTok have intensified, following discussions of a potential collaboration between GCB Bank and the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations.

GCB Bank expressed its significant interest in becoming a viable payment gateway to ensure Ghanaian creators receive their rightful earnings.

According to the bank, its extensive infrastructure and technological readiness to support the creative economy align with the government's move to help creators in Ghana monetise their contents.

Leading the team, GCB's Chief of Staff, Abraham Ferguson, said; “The bank possesses robust connectivity with MasterCard and Visa, enabling it to accept and make payments directly onto cards."

The team further showcased GCB’s capability to facilitate payouts through various channels, including MoMo, direct bank accounts, among others.

“The bank's primary aim is to find a way for Ghanaians to get paid for their content and manage cash-outs for gifts received,” he added.

Part of the discussion was also to create a potential collaboration aimed at establishing a comprehensive payment framework for Ghanaian content creators on TikTok.

The sector minister, Samuel Nartey George, actively championed GCB Bank's proposal during the discussions, engaging directly with Tokumbo Ibrahim, TikTok's representative for West Africa.

He stressed that utilising GCB Bank as an official channel for payments would not only provide a reliable mechanism for content creators, but also eliminate the need for creators to use third parties, thereby avoiding significant margins and ensuring greater financial benefits for Ghanaian talents.

The discussions concluded with a commitment from Tokumbo (TikTok) to review the feasibility of the proposed payment solution.

Ferguson intimated that GCB Bank looks forward to a positive response, which would immediately trigger steps to set up a direct connection between GCB Bank and TikTok.

“This would involve formalising a payment framework in consultation with relevant financial authorities and establishing technical teams to facilitate the seamless integration,” he noted.
