Ghana to start Domestic Roaming Policy

Government has begun consultation on the introduction of Domestic Roaming Policy in the telecom industry.

Domestic Roaming refers to the situation where a mobile subscriber could easily switch on to another network if he or she is unable to access the original network without having to port the number.

Communications Minister Dr. Omane Boamah believes the policy will improve service quality and inject some competition in the telecom sector.

He was speaking at a ceremony to commemorate the World Telecom and Information Society Day.

This year’s celebration is on the theme: “Addressing Challenges of the Telecommunication Industry to Promote Growth and Development – Focus on Domestic Roaming and OTT Services.”

The Head, Faculty of Informatics at the Ghana Telecom University College Dr Ezer Osei Yeboah Boateng told Starr Business the Domestic Roaming Policy is a laudable one.

“It will help new entrants into the telecom industry because they can leverage on the infrastructure of existing Telcos,” he said.

Meanwhile, the government has no intention of banning internet voice calls in the country. The pronouncement puts to rest speculations of a possible ban of such calls following concerns raised by the MTN CEO over their impact on revenue.
