The Minister of Transport, Joseph Nikpe, has announced that the government is replacing the existing Air Traffic Control Tower at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) with a modern, state-of-the-art facility.
Speaking at the government’s Accountability Series on September 16, 2025, Nikpe noted that the current tower, which dates back to before Ghana’s independence, is no longer fit for purpose and is being phased out.
“Construction of the new Air Traffic Control Tower is ongoing and has reached 20% completion. Once finished, it will feature a Visual Control Room, Approach Radar Room, Technical Equipment Room, and Operations Room, among others,” he said.

The minister stressed that the new facility will significantly enhance aviation safety, operational efficiency, and Ghana’s status as a regional aviation hub.
He added that modernising air traffic control infrastructure is a critical part of the government’s agenda to improve the country’s transport systems and support economic growth.
