President John Dramani Mahama has hinted at possible plans to launch a new national carrier in partnership with Portugal's national airline.

According to him, Ghana is making efforts to revive its national airline as it seeks to become an active player in the aviation industry.

The President unveiled the plans while receiving the credentials of Portugal’s new ambassador to Ghana, Maria Da Conceição de.

He said, “I've flown it before, and so I have experienced your national airline. Ghana itself is trying to establish a national airline, and at the appropriate time, we’ll be looking for partners. Perhaps, if Portugal’s national airline is interested, we could consider a partnership.”

President Mahama emphasised that Ghana's business environment remains safe for investment and open to partnerships.

“Ghana has a good business environment for mining, oil and gas, and other opportunities... with a market size of almost 35 million people. Forging stronger relations to do business in Ghana would be a win-win, both in terms of investment and in creating opportunities for our young people,” he added.

Earlier, the President inaugurated a task force to oversee the establishment of a national airline, reaffirming the government’s commitment to reviving the country’s aviation ambitions after years of stalled efforts to launch a flagship carrier.

Ghana’s national airline has been inactive for nearly two decades, following a US ban linked to operational debts.

The country’s original flag carrier, Ghana Airways, operated from 1958 until its collapse in 2004. It was succeeded by Ghana International Airlines, which operated from 2005 until it also ceased operations in 2010.

However, plans are now underway to revive the carrier.
