Ghana Poultry Association to receive GH¢350,000.00 support

The Ghana National Association of Poultry Farmers is to receive a GH¢350,000.00 life-line package to boost the operations of the members and make the poultry industry more vibrant.

Mr. Kwadwo Asante, the National President, said the money would come from Liberty Commodities Limited, an international trading group.

This would be used to support the Association’s “broiler project”, under which the farmers would be supplied with breeding equipment, day-old chicks and exposed to feeding techniques that would make the fowls ready for the market within six weeks.

The group has also offered to provide the farmers with ready market.

Mr. Asante was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of a stakeholders’ forum organized by the association at the Centre for National Culture (CNC) in Kumasi.

He said the poultry sector, if given the needed aid could play important role in the socio-economic development of the nation.

It could for example generate about 600,000 jobs and that is why everything must be done to give adequate protection to the poultry industry and save it from collapsing.

He said the present situation where Ghana imports about 200,000 metric tonnes of poultry products annually must change.

He spoke of plans to meet with both, the Ministries of Trade and Industry, and Food and Agriculture, as well as the Ghana Revenue Authority to discuss ways of tackling challenges facing the farmers.

These include high prices for poultry inputs, the unfair competition and lack of credit facilities.**
