The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Engineer Mark Baah, has announced the construction of a 330-kilovolt (kV) double-circuit transmission line between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire following the completion of feasibility studies.

He stated that the project, valued at €154.4 million, will cover environmental and social impact mitigation, construction supervision, and project management.

This initiative aims to strengthen electricity exchange between the two countries and enhance grid stability across the broader West African region.

Speaking at a ministerial committee meeting on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, Engineer Baah stated that the project forms part of efforts to integrate energy systems across the ECOWAS sub-region under the West African Power Pool (WAPP) framework.

“The project involves the construction of a 330kV double-circuit transmission line, stretching approximately 243 kilometers, about 122 kilometers on each side of the border. It will connect the existing Biahoué (Bijave) substation in Côte d’Ivoire to the new Dunkwa 2 substation in Ghana. Although there is currently a Dunkwa 1 substation, it operates at 161kV. The new facility will operate at 330kV,” he said.

He added that, “Beyond enhancing bilateral energy trade, this project is expected to contribute to grid reliability across West Africa. It has been deemed both technically sound and environmentally manageable.”

The West African Power Pool (WAPP) seeks to promote and develop power generation and transmission infrastructure.

It is also to coordinate energy exchange among ECOWAS member states.
