GhIPSS receives special recognition for implementing MMI

The Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) Limited has been recognised for implementing the Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI) Platform at the 9th Edition of the Ghana Information Technology & Telecoms (GITTA) Awards.

This award was a special recognition of the role GhIPSS played in the development and implementation of Ghana's Mobile Money Interoperability platform. The two-phased interoperability architecture, is the first of it kind on the African continent. Making Ghana one of the few Countries to achieve this Universal Interoperability.

The Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI) platform has recorded more than 4.4 million transactions since it introduction in May, 2018. Beginning with just 96,907 transactions in its first month, public usage of the cross-network platform has grown phenomenally from 422,275 transactions in December last year to 502,873 transactions in May this year.

Ghana achieved a 'Universal Interoperability' with the completion of the MMI project. Three independent payment platforms (gh-link, Mobile Money, e-zwich) were interconnected; creating the rails for seamlessly transactions across wallets, e-zwich cards and bank accounts.

In 2017, His Excellency the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia commissioned the Mobile Money Interoperability Project. This followed the year on year increase in mobile money transaction volumes and the increasing number of subscribers.

GhIPSS was tasked to lead the project. Together with the three mobile Money Operators: MTN, Vodafone & Airtel/Tigo, and financial institutions, Ghana’s Mobile Money Interoperability platform was successfully launched.
