George Opare Addo denies alleged contract with Hubtel

Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo

The Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has denied social media claims suggesting that his ministry has entered into a contractual agreement with Hubtel, a Ghanaian financial technology and e-commerce company, to manage the National Service payment platform.

The allegation has sparked debate on social media platform X, with many questioning why the ministry, under the National Democratic Congress (NDC), would sign such a contract.

This is because party had previously suggested that the company was linked to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and lambasted him for using his influence to help it secure juicy contracts.

A user who posted the allegation on his official X handle wrote, “According to reports, the Youth Minister has awarded the contract to manage the National Service payment platform to Hubtel. This follows the reassignment of the immediate past Director-General over his insistence on continuing with the current service providers.”

However, George Opare Addo refuted the claims, saying he does not know the source of the allegation.

Responding to the post on his official X platform, he wrote, “I am not sure where this is coming from. I can assure you no contract whatsoever has been awarded to the best of my knowledge.”

He continued: “I entreat @mensaduncan or his organization to provide any contrary claims. This is unacceptable!”

Hubtel provides mobile financial services, including digital payments, e-commerce solutions, and bulk messaging for businesses and consumers.

In the run-up to the 2024 elections, some prominent members of the then-opposition NDC had linked the company to then-Vice President Dr Bawumia, alleging that he was behind it.

Regarding the current allegation, Hubtel has yet to make an official statement to either confirm or deny the reported new contract with the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment.
