The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) is calling on the government to strictly enforce Ghana's retail laws in order to safeguard local businesses.
According to the Vice President of GUTA, Clement Boateng, the influx of foreign traders into Ghana's market continues to negatively impact local enterprises.
The leadership of the Abossey-Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association in Accra has also issued a renewed 14-day ultimatum to foreign retailers operating in the area, following the expiration of an initial deadline on September 11, 2025.
In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb Business, Boateng emphasised the need for proper enforcement of Ghana’s retail laws.

"What we want the government to do is to enforce the law. It's just about enforcing the law, because this law was crafted through the wisdom of our late president. He foresaw that if no protection was put in place for citizens, a time would come when they would be pushed out and left without jobs," he said.
Boateng also noted that the retail sector has increasingly become a refuge for retirees from the public sector, many of whom turn to trade after retirement.
"How many jobs has the public sector created? A little over one million. And when public sector workers retire, they all come back to trade. So the law that has been enacted, let the law work," he added.
