The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) has announced the appointment of Professor Francis Hasford as its new Deputy Director-General, effective Monday, June 16, 2025.

Professor Hasford takes over from Professor Dickson Adomako, who retired after reaching the statutory retirement age of 60, following a distinguished 23-year service to the Commission.

A seasoned Medical Physicist with over 17 years of experience, Professor Hasford has held several senior roles within GAEC, nationally, and on international platforms.

Prior to this appointment, he served as Head of the Department of Medical Physics at the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS), University of Ghana, and as Director of the Radiological and Medical Sciences Research Institute (RAMSRI) at GAEC.

Internationally, Prof. Hasford is a prominent figure in the medical physics community. He currently serves as President of the Federation of African Medical Physics Organisations (FAMPO), is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP), and acts as a Project Counterpart for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Domestically, he is also an Executive Member of the Ghana Young Academy and the Vice President of the Ghana Society for Medical Physics.

The Director-General of GAEC, Prof Samuel Boakye Dampare, officially introduced Professor Hasford at the Commission’s mid-year staff durbar. He described the appointment as a strategic addition to the Commission’s leadership, citing Prof Hasford’s depth of knowledge and track record of innovation.

“Professor Hasford is well endowed with visionary leadership and deep technical knowledge in nuclear science and the workings of GAEC. He will be an invaluable asset to our team as we advance our strategic objective of using nuclear science to better the lives of Ghanaians,” Professor Dampare said.

Professor Hasford is credited with leading impactful initiatives during his tenure at RAMSRI, notably the launch of GAEC’s flagship cancer awareness and free screening programme.

He has also contributed significantly to national policy development, research, capacity building, and mentorship, areas aligned with GAEC’s mandate to promote the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology for Ghana’s socioeconomic advancement.

In his remarks, Professor Hasford expressed his appreciation for the opportunity and affirmed his commitment to the Commission’s mission.

“It is an honour to serve at this pivotal time in GAEC’s history. I look forward to discharging my responsibilities in collaboration with all stakeholders and harnessing nuclear technology for sustainable development,” he said.
