Freight Forwarders pay visit to Director of Tema Port

The Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders and the Association of Custom House Agents of Ghana has paid a familiarization visit to the newly appointed Director of Tema Port, Sandra Opoku and has declared their unflinching support for her success for her current position.

The freight forwarders led by their Chairman, Alex Asiamah discussed how to, protect the transit trade in Ghana among many other issues.

Following the declaration of reduction of import duties by the Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the group asked for a thorough engagement with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and the Economic Management Team to properly device ways of implementing the policy so as not to miss projected revenue targets.

According to them, this will ensure the implementation will not affect the World Trade Organization’s standard of operations at the ports.

They also raised concerns over the fluctuation of the exchange rate where they advised its benchmarking to help address speculations and to enable the importers plan in advance. The freight forwarders also appealed to GPHA to deal with shipping lines who charge higher exchange rates than the banks rate.

The Director of Tema Port, Sandra Opoku has assured the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders to work on resolving challenges affecting their operations at the port in order to reduce cost of doing business.

Meanwhile, executives of the Ghana Dock Labor Company and Ghana Maritime Labor Company have also reaffirmed their unflinching support of the Company to the Director of Tema Port, Sandra Opoku.

Both the Port of Tema and the Ghana Dock Labor Company assured each other of effective collaboration to make the Port of Tema the best and most attractive in the sub-region.

The meeting also discussed the provision of improved safety gears for the workers while increasing productivity.
