Fire gutted Shed Four of the Takoradi Port early Friday morning destroying some metal containers that contained oil waste from the oil rigs operating in the Jubilee Oilfield.
The Director of Takoradi Port, Captain James Owusu Koranteng, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the fire did not cause any extensive damage to the facility.
He said the fire was detected at 0420 hours and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Unit stationed at the port got to the scene at 0427 and put it out by 0600hours.
Explaining the cause of the fire, Captain Koranteng said it was as a result of spontaneous ignition of heat that had accumulated in the oil waste containers at the shed.
He said the personnel of the GNFS were working feverishly to evacuate the containers from the facility to a safer location.
When GNA got to the scene, the GNFS had cordoned the facility with red and white tape to prevent people from entering the facility.
