A smallholder farmer, Fiifi Boafo, is calling on the government to raise the cocoa producer price for the 2025/2026 crop season.

According to him, the previous NPP government in 2024 increased the producer price of cocoa from GH¢3,000 per bag to GH¢3,100 per bag just a month after a decline in the value of the cedi.

In a Facebook post sighted by GhanaWeb Business on September 9, 2025, Boafo urged the government to take a cue from its predecessor and adjust the cocoa producer price accordingly.

"It is crucial for Finance Minister, Hon. Ato Forson, and the NDC government to follow this example now by increasing the producer price for the 2025/26 season to support our farmers," he said.

The government, on August 7, 2025, announced a new cocoa producer price of US$5,040 per tonne for the 2025/26 season.

Boafo noted that since the announcement, the cedi has depreciated further against the dollar.

This, he argued, makes it necessary for the government to adjust the producer price to help cushion Ghanaian farmers.

"Currently, farmers should be receiving at least GH¢3,780 per bag of cocoa to align with existing market conditions. Instead, they are receiving a modest increase of only GH¢128. This situation is untenable, especially considering the previous promise of GH¢6,000 made by the NDC, which remains unfulfilled," he added.
