Farmers urged to grow organic fruits and vegetable

Farmers in Ghana have been urged to grow organic fruits and vegetable because of their health and environmental benefits for a healthier life.

“Organic farmers and processors certainly enable the provision of healthy foods and a sustainable environment with increasing awareness of the benefits of eating organic foods”.

Mr Samuel Nii Quarcoo, Chief Executive Officer of Bio Ghana Network, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) made this known at a workshop under the theme “opportunities for trade and investment in organics”, in Accra.

He said “it is a fact that organic products are chemical free and hence do not pose health risks associated with misuse of chemicals in conventional (non organic) food”.

The CEO said, Bio Ghana Network seeks to create a platform for interactive discussion between organic farmers, processors and representatives of certification bodies to dialogue on options available, including common organic certification for its members.

“There is the need to look for alternative ways of going through the process such that the certifier, the certified and the consumer are all better served hence to create awareness of opportunities for trade and investment in organic and to connect to the world’s leading companies”, he emphasised.

Mr Quarcoo said, organic food fetch a premium on the market while its consumption the world over was increasing every year hence the need for Bio Ghana to provide relevant information and leads to investors to be able to successfully tap full potential of the business in Ghana.

He gave the assurance that Bio Ghana Network would continue to participate in Bio fact Fair in Germany every year to help market Ghana’s organic produce on the international market.
