Farmers in Adaklu asked to embrace 'Planting for Food and Jobs'

Mr. Kadey Phanuel Donkor, the Adaklu District Chief Executive has expressed worry over the “lackadaisical” attitude of farmers in the district towards government’s policy of Planting for Food and Jobs.

He said it was distressing to note that out of the 400 maize and 100 rice farmers registered under the programme only 164 and 24 maize and rice farmers respectively accessed their inputs.

Mr. Donkor who was addressing the 33rd Adaklu District Farmers Day celebration at Adaklu Geofe, therefore, appealed to farmers especially the youth to embrace the programme for food security and job creation.

“Let us see the programme as a national call to duty and rekindle our resolve to fight against hunger, poverty, and unemployment through the planting for food and jobs”, he advised.

The theme for the celebration was “Farming for Food and Jobs”. Mr Donkor appealed to graduates of Agriculture Colleges to register with the “Planting for Food and Jobs” initiative in their respective districts to enable the country to achieve the annual growth target.

Mr. Philip Akator, Adaklu District Director of Agriculture said where food supplies failed to expand in pace with the growing demand, the result was likely to be a substantial rise in food prices.

He said there was, therefore, the need for sustainable and responsible investment in agriculture to boost food production to match the galloping population growth and also create business opportunities.

Togbe Gbogbi Atsa V, Paramount Chief of Adaklu who chaired the function said the menace of Fulani Herdsmen in the area was affecting farming in the area.

Mr. John Kwakume, 64, a native of Tedeafenu won the Best District Farmer award and was presented with a motorbike, two pairs of Wellington boots, two spraying machines, three cutlasses three bars of key soap, radio set, a piece of cloth and a certificate.
