The Amenfi Central District Assembly recently marked its annual Farmers Day celebration with a vibrant ceremony held in Amuni, aimed at recognizing the tireless efforts of agricultural workers and promoting diversification within the sector.

The district-level event brought together farmers, traditional leaders, and political figures, highlighting both the successes of local agriculture and the critical infrastructure challenges facing rural communities.

In his address, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Amenfi Central, Peter Amponsah, expressed profound gratitude to the farming community.

He praised their continuous dedication, acknowledging their sacrifice as the foundation of food security for the district and for Ghana as a whole.

DCE Amponsah also used the platform to outline the national agricultural agenda, referencing the vision that President John Dramani Mahama has for farmers in the district.

He noted that the government’s commitment is centered on implementing strategies designed to boost agriculture and enhance productivity across Amenfi Central.

Taking the stage, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Amenfi Central, delivered an encouraging message, urging the youth to embrace farming as a viable and profitable career.

The MP challenged the stereotype that agriculture is limited to traditional crop cultivation.

"Remember, not only weeding but the rearing of animals, fish farming, and other viable areas are all agriculture into which one can venture and earn income," she stressed.

She reinforced her message by citing her own example, "I use myself as an example. Even though I am the MP for the constituency, everyone can testify that I love agriculture."

The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards, with Anthony Boakye Sika earning the prestigious title of Overall Best District Farmer.

In his acceptance speech, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to the district leadership for their support. He specifically thanked MP Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the DCE, the District Agriculture Officer, and the entire Assembly.

"They have been of help every day, educating and encouraging me anytime I get closer to them so that my farm will flourish," he remarked, emphasizing the importance of continuous technical and official guidance.

While appreciative of the celebration, the Chief of Amuni, Nana Kwaku Akandor, used the presence of high-ranking officials to highlight a pressing community need: reliable mobile network connectivity.

He thanked the DCE and the MP for bringing such a significant celebration to Amuni ahead of other communities in Amenfi Central. However, he appealed for urgent intervention to address persistent communication blackspots affecting the area.

"We are living in a technological age, yet you can’t make calls if you want to reach someone outside the community," the Chief lamented.

He made a passionate appeal, especially to MP Joana Gyan Cudjoe, to engage major telecom operators to ensure that residents of Amuni can finally enjoy stable and essential communication services.
