The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the production of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix with immediate effect, citing serious health and safety concerns following consumer complaints and a subsequent investigation into the manufacturing plant of Nutrifoods Ghana Limited.

The suspension, which was announced in statement on Friday, August 3, 2025, comes alongside a directive for the market recall of all canned Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix products, as well as specific batches of the product in 380g and 1.05kg pouches.

"The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the manufacture of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix with immediate effect. A market recall of all canned Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix products, and specific batches of the product in pouches (the 380g and 1.05kg pouches) was earlier directed by the FDA", it noted.

The Authority also disclosed that its investigation had uncovered significant infractions at the company’s production facility.

These included poor maintenance of critical equipment and inadequate monitoring systems, all of which failed to meet essential public health safety standards.

“The lapses at the manufacturing plant compromised the integrity of the canned products by affecting the sealing mechanisms. This led to contamination and bloating of the pouches, and in some cases, visible mold growth,” the FDA said.

FDA officials confirmed that Nutrifoods Ghana Limited had previously been barred from manufacturing the product in January 2025.

The recent findings, however, raise questions about compliance and oversight, prompting the FDA to launch an internal investigation to determine whether there were any regulatory lapses on its part.

“Any dereliction of duty identified will be swiftly dealt with in order to strengthen the FDA's regulatory oversight,” the Authority emphasized,

The FDA urged consumers, wholesalers, and retailers to take heed of the directive and immediately remove the affected products from circulation.

“We will continue to exercise rigorous oversight in accordance with our mandate to protect public health and safety,” the statement added.
