Ensure PSI does not become 9-day wonder - NGO

Accra, Nov. 26 GNA- An Environmentally Concerned Citizens Association of Ghana (ECCAG) a local NGO has appealed to government to ensure that the President's Special Initiative does not become a nine-day wonder.

The association noted that numerous programmes and initiatives by governments with laudable aims had failed to achieve their set objectives because of poor management and partisan politics.

A statement signed by Mr. Joseph Yaw Aidoo, National President of the ECCAG commended the Ministry of Lands and Forestry for launching an afforestation programme at Koforidua under the President's Special Initiative.

Mr. Aidoo said the initiative would create an employment for the people in that community adding, " So far 120 people have been engaged full-time on the project".

He expressed regret at organizations that were given land and funds to undertake tree-planting exercise but only cleared the land and failed to nurture the trees to maturity.

The statement noted that the organization had ended a two-week tree planting and anti-bush fire prevention education and awareness creation tour in the Central Region.

Mr. Aidoo gave the assurance that ECCAG would monitor tree-planting projects and continue to create awareness and educate chiefs on the importance of afforestation.
