Energy commission introduces stiff regulations to check fake cables

The Energy Commission says it has put measures in place to ensure that substandard cables are not used in wiring.

Assistant Program Officer at the Energy Commission, Stephen Yemoh, said that the Electrical Wiring Regulation stipulates that only certified electricians can undertake any electrical wiring in Ghana.

Meanwhile, the Certified Electrical Wiring Professionals Association has corroborated claims by the Ghana Standards Authority that about 70 percent of imported electrical cables on the market are sub-standard.

President of the Association, Wisdom Gakpo, said the influx of such cables is a major challenge to electricians.

He, however, indicated that as people trained and certified by the Energy Commission, members of the Association are able to detect fake cables and avoid them.

He is therefore calling on the public to deal with only certified electricians.
