The Energy Commission has certified 884 electrical wiring professionals following the successful completion of the May/June 2026 certification examination.

A total of 1,036 candidates sat for the examination, with 884 passing successfully. The latest certification brings the number of professionals certified under the programme to 19,442.

The Electrical Wiring Certification programme forms part of efforts by the Energy Commission to strengthen Ghana’s technical workforce and improve safety standards as emerging energy technologies, including electric vehicles, solar systems and battery storage, become more widespread.

Speaking at the 25th Electrical Wiring Certification and Awards Ceremony in Accra, Acting Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Adwoa Serwaa Bondzie, said the Commission, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, was developing a national platform to track electric vehicle charging stations and monitor related data.

She said the platform would provide information on charging infrastructure, energy consumption, faults and outages, while supporting better planning and helping the Commission assess the impact of electric vehicle charging on the national electricity grid.

“What we are trying to do is to have every charging point in Ghana on a platform where we can see what is being done because we know and, based on our small investigation, we know that the charging stations are going to have an impact on the grid, but what impact would it have on the grid, we need to know,” she said.

“When people are charging their vehicles, when people are doing the battery swap and this regulation will allow us to know that, and the portal will also give us more information to allow for energy planning in Ghana.”

Bondzie said the Commission, as it approaches its 30th anniversary in 2027, remained committed to setting standards that promote innovation, protect consumers and contribute to a safer, cleaner and more resilient energy future.

Board Member of the Energy Commission, Professor Ernest Ofori Asamoah, said Ghana’s clean energy transition would require a significant expansion of electric mobility and a corresponding increase in the number of skilled professionals able to install and maintain related infrastructure.

He said the anticipated growth in electric vehicles would increase demand for charging infrastructure and other specialised electrical systems.

“By 2040, we expect that there will be a ban on importation of petrol and diesel cars, and this is also in line with the energy transition. To get that, there’s the essence of getting professionals because if you have 35 percent of your vehicles being EV, then it means that the charging system and all other systems need professionals to take care of them,” he said.

Deputy Director-General of Operations at the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Dr Awal Mohamed, advised electricians to maintain high professional standards and avoid undertaking work outside the scope of their certification.

He said certified practitioners had an important role to play in curbing unsafe electrical wiring practices and promoting public safety.

The Energy Commission, in collaboration with the GSA, also launched a revised Electrical Wiring Code to strengthen safety, efficiency and compliance in electrical installations across the country.

The revised code provides updated standards for electrical wiring installations and reflects changes in Ghana’s electrical environment, including the growing use of solar photovoltaic systems, battery storage, inverters and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Ms Bondzie said the existing code had served Ghana well but the electrical environment had changed significantly, making the revision necessary.

The ceremony was held under the theme, “Setting the Standard: Powering Ghana’s Future – EV, Solar and Beyond.”
