Electricity tariffs to increase in October, water bills unchanged - PURC

Starting October 1, 2025, electricity bills will see an increment of 1.14% across all consumer categories, according to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

Water tariffs, however, will remain unchanged for the same period.

The adjustment comes as part of PURC’s regular quarterly review, which considers key economic indicators such as the cedi-to-dollar exchange rate, inflation, fuel costs, and the mix of power sources used to generate electricity.

In a statement signed by the Acting Executive Secretary, Shafic Suleman, the Commission explained that the review helps preserve the real value of tariffs and ensures utility providers remain financially stable - a necessary step to keep electricity and water flowing reliably.

Cedi trades at GH¢12.30 to the dollar amid sustained currency pressure

For this quarter, PURC based its calculations on a projected exchange rate of GH¢12.3715 to the dollar, an inflation rate of 12.43%, and a natural gas cost of $7.7134 per MMBtu.

Ghana’s power generation mix is expected to stay at roughly 29% hydro and 71% thermal.

While electricity costs will edge up slightly, PURC pledged to keep a close eye on utility providers to ensure quality service and value for money.
