EPA set to wean off gov't subvention next year

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is likely to be among the first state agencies to be cut off from government subventions early next year.

About 12 agencies currently on government’s subvented roll, including the VRA and the DVLA- are reportedly laying the groundwork to be weaned off government subvention and ostensibly finance their operations without falling on government support.

The move comes on the heels of recommendations from the Single Spine Pay Policy forum in Ho years ago, which identified several state agencies that can do without government subvention.

The wean-off exercise is to drive state agencies to operate more effectively and in a more business-like manner for them to become sustainable and profitable.

The Acting Director of Environment Assessment and Audit of the EPA, Mr. Kwabena Badu-Yeboah,in an interview with the B&FT says the Agency is finalising its business strategy to help enhance internally generated revenue in addition to its traditional sources of revenue such as fees, charges and fines.

“This will help us to employ more technical staff and also compensate ourselves adequately when we are taken off government’s subvention.”
