The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to carry out a major transformer replacement and upgrade exercise in selected parts of Accra, following approval from the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor.

In a statement released on March 27, 2026, ECG explained that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve the reliability, stability, and overall capacity of electricity supply across the country.

According to the company, the first phase of the project will involve the replacement and upgrade of twelve power transformers across six primary substations.

The affected areas include Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa, and Lashibi.

The transformers are set to be upgraded from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA. ECG indicated that this enhancement will significantly increase load-handling capacity and help reduce system overloads, particularly in these rapidly expanding communities where demand for electricity continues to grow.

The first phase of the exercise is scheduled to begin on 8 April 2026 and is expected to be completed by 10 April 2026.

As part of the implementation process, ECG noted that there will be brief planned power outages in the affected areas. These interruptions are necessary to ensure the safety of personnel and to allow for the successful execution of the upgrade works.

The company added that a detailed schedule outlining the planned activities, expected durations, outage periods, and the specific communities affected has been prepared. This information will be made available through ECG’s official communication channels and other appropriate platforms.

ECG assured customers that measures will be put in place to minimise the duration and impact of the outages.

Residents and businesses in the affected areas are therefore encouraged to take note of the schedules once published and make the necessary arrangements to reduce any inconvenience.

The company further stated that the upgrade programme is a key step in strengthening Ghana’s electricity infrastructure, improving system resilience, and ensuring a more reliable and efficient power supply for consumers.

ECG expressed appreciation to the public for their patience, understanding, and cooperation as it undertakes the essential improvements.
