Suspected Armed Robber Dies in Police Cell

ONE OF the five armed robbers who were arrested at Dawa by the police after they had robbed passengers at Sogakope was reported dead at his police cells at Tema late Sunday night.

According to Mrs. Agnes O. Sika-Nartey, Assistant Commissioner of Police and regional commander, the deceased armed robber who was the driver was identified as Clement Bantey, 32 years old.

Three others who are in police custody include Mohammed Zakari, 19, Richard Habor, 28 and Bobby Shittu, a Nigerian, 23.

Mrs Sika-Nartey told Chronicle that at about 3:00am at dawn on April 27, this year, four armed robbers mounted a road block at Afiadenyegba Junction, 13 kilometres to Sogakope with a cargo truck number AS 1429 D.

As a result, 57 passengers on board a Mercedes Benz bus with registration number AS1191F, a Kumasi-Aflao bound vehicle were robbed by the armed robbers after they had indiscriminately given warning shots.

According to the regional commander, an urvan vehicle which was closely following the Mercedes Benz bus managed to pass by and reported the armed banditry to the Sogakope police, who in turn informed all stations along the route through wireless message of the armed robbers.

The robbers were arrested at Dawa police check point.

The police retrieved one shot gun, ?2,818,000, 2,000 Naira, 58,500 CFA, 220 Kenya Shillings and 40 Egyptian pounds when their vehicle GR 455IR was searched.

Mrs Sika-Nartey said the robbers will be sent to court soon.
