DVLA rakes in more revenue

Wa, Aug. 24, GNA - A joint operation carried out by the Ghana Police Service; Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to arrest and prosecute vehicle offenders in the Wa Municipality has yielded more revenue to the Government.

The DVLA, which used to generate between 25 million cedis and 35 million cedis a month raked in more than 100 million cedis in July 2005 alone following the exercise.

Mr Divine Denoo, Upper West Regional Officer of DVLA, told the Ghana News Agency at Wa on Wednesday that that many motor riders and drivers in the Wa Municipality did not possess licences or had not renewed them for so many years and the exercise was to clampdown on them.

He said other DVLA offices throughout the country wouls soon embark on similar exercises to arrest and prosecute offenders. Mr Denoo appealed to the Leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union to intensify their educational programmes to encourage more drivers to put their vehicles in order before embarking on journeys.

He said the DVLA was not carrying out these exercises to punish the drivers and vehicle owners, but because it wanted to guarantee the safety of passengers and the vehicles.

He said many of the vehicles were also without road worthy and insurance certificates and advised drivers to ensure that they obtained them without delay.
