Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has so far impounded three hundred unaccustomed luxury vehicles in Eight months.

The vehicles impounded during an exercise conducted between May and December this year, was to check the increasing sale of vehicles smuggled from neighbouring countries, particularly, Togo to Ghana.

The vehicles parked at the Customs Car Park near the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra, includes: Range Rovers, an Infiniti, Mercedes Benz (different classes), a Ferrari 360, a Toyota Landcruiser V8, BMWs, Audis, Tundras, Toyota Prados, Toyota Rav4s, Toyota Camrys, Toyota Sequoias, Benz Sprinters and Toyota Corollas.

The Deputy Commissioner in charge of Preventive at Customs, Mr Seth Dwira, who revealed the initiative to the media in Accra, said, “authorities have made attempt to auction the vehicles, if the supposed owners failed to pay a 100 per cent duty.”

According to him, “The owners are given one-month period to settle up with the customs division otherwise the vehicles will be auctioned.”

Mr Dwira said the division had intensified its task force operations on all major roads, adding that the exercise would be carried out in all the 10 regions.

He said. “It is becoming alarming the rate at which people are smuggling vehicles into the country,”

“They (smugglers) are going all out to outwit us, so we are also very proactive,” Mr Dwira said, adding: “We have identified their ways and we will continue to identify their strategies.”

He said, “Once you want to stay in Ghana, you have to register your vehicle with a Ghanaian number plate and pay the required duty as well, but when you want to be smart, we will also be smart.”
