Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the first billionaire in football history, according to the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which tracks the world’s wealthiest individuals.

The 40-year-old Portugal captain and Al-Nassr striker has been valued at $1.4 billion, marking the first time his wealth has been measured by the index.

His fortune consists of a blend of career earnings, investments, and high-profile endorsements.

Between 2002 and 2023, Ronaldo earned more than $550 million in salary alone, with commercial deals and sponsorships further boosting his net worth. One of his most lucrative partnerships is a decade-long contract with Nike worth nearly $18 million annually.

Ronaldo’s 2022 move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr cemented his financial dominance. He reportedly became the best-paid player in football history with an annual salary of £177 million.

Initially contracted until June 2025, he has since signed a two-year extension valued at over $400 million, securing his place at the club beyond his 42nd birthday.

His long-time rival Lionel Messi has also amassed extraordinary wealth, earning more than $600 million in pre-tax salary over his career, according to Bloomberg.

Since 2023, Messi has been on a guaranteed annual salary of about $20 million, which is roughly 10% of Ronaldo’s recent income.
