Credit Unions Urged To Revitalize Operations

Agona Swedru (Central Region), 29 Oct. The International Credit Unions day in the Central regional has been celebrated at Agona Swedru with a call on credit unions to revitalise their activities to raise the living standards of the people. The theme for the cerebration was ''credit unions the worldwide choice ''. In an address, Nana Kofi Essamoah, chairman of the central regional chapter of Ghana co-operative credit unions association (CUA), praised the pioneers of the movement for their foresight. He said credit unions throughout the world have enabled people to have access to credit and urged society members to increase their share capital for their own benefit. He noted that out of a population of 18 million only 60,000 belong to credit unions and called on the societies to embark on a membership drive. Mr Sam B. Dzorkpata, national chairman of the board of directors of CUA, commended members of the Swedru Teachers Co-operative credit union for helping to solve some of the economic hardships of teachers in the district .
