Parliament is exploring a bold plan to power local industries with renewable energy through the creation of Community Green Energy Zones an initiative aimed at promoting sustainable industrialisation, green jobs, and energy access across the country.

The proposal, led by the Climate Parliament, a network of legislators advocating clean energy transitions calls for the establishment of a special fund and capacity-building support for Members of Parliament (MPs) to implement renewable energy projects in their constituencies.

The Chair of the Climate Parliament, Yaw Frimpong Addo, emphasised the initiative would enable MPs to play a direct role in Ghana’s energy transition by turning their constituencies into clean energy hubs.

“Green energy is the new phenomenon now, so we need to establish green zones across the country. Each MP will be encouraged to develop a zone focused on renewable energy use in local industries,” he said at a national workshop on Green Energy Zones and Investment in Accra.

He cited areas like the Suame Magazine industrial enclave in Kumasi as ideal examples of how such zones could operate where all small-scale workshops and manufacturing activities are powered by solar energy instead of fossil fuels.

Addo further proposed the creation of a revolving fund to finance constituency-based renewable energy systems, saying it would help overcome initial capital barriers and accelerate adoption.

“When the fund becomes revolving, many will take advantage of it, and more of these zones will emerge to create jobs and support local manufacturing,” he said.

Climate Parliament Director for West and Central Africa, Dr Emmanuel Marfo, said the workshop sought to deepen collaboration between lawmakers, financial institutions, and renewable energy developers to expand Ghana’s clean energy landscape.

He announced that the Climate Parliament is developing a Climate Finance Toolkit to help MPs identify funding sources and partnerships for constituency-level projects.

“Once MPs understand where to find green finance opportunities, they can better champion projects that advance both development and climate goals,” he explained.
