Committees asked to keep proper accounts on kilo deductions

Akim Swedru (E/R), April 25, GNA- Committees of cocoa buying societies, entrusted to keep proceeds from "kilo" deductions from cocoa farmers in the Birim Central Municipal, have been asked to keep proper accounts of the money.

Mr Emmanuel Duah, the Municipal Best Farmer, who made the appeal, said due to improper records on the deductions, many cocoa buying societies have stopped the practice that was helpful to cocoa farmers. He was speaking in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA), at Akim Swedru on Friday.

Mr Duah said the deductions were not attempts to extort money from cocoa farmers as was being speculated by some people in the area. He explained that such moneys were used to purchase farming inputs for sale to farmers on credit and urged committee members to be accountable to the farmers.

Mr Duah called on the farmers to maintain their farms regularly and to patronise government's cocoa spraying programme to enable them to increase output.
