Celebrating Africa Day with the lowest calling rate ever

Africa is the second biggest continent in the world and the second most populated as well. It is home to 30% of the mineral reserves of the world, one of the greatest wilderness and many of the most beautiful and loved animals as well as endangered species; one can also find ancient art, exotic mountain plants, mysterious desert circles and 7 different ecosystems: from savanna to montane and desert to tropical forest.

With all its richness and beauty, no wonder everybody wanted a piece of it, therefore all of Africa was colonized by foreign powers during the “scramble for Africa”, except Ethiopia and Liberia. Before colonial rule, Africa comprised up to 10,000 different states and autonomous groups with distinct languages and customs.

Ghana was the first country to gain its independence in 1957 and convened in 1958 the first Conference of Independent African States, event that was an undeniable statement of the rejection of Africa towards imperialist colonization and dominance; and to reinforce this fight and encourage more countries to obtain independence the conference established the observance of the African Freedom Day on April 15th.

It was after changed to Africa Day and to be celebrated on May 25th, after the creation of the Organization of African Unity founded on May 25th 1963.

Looking back at history and the origin of Africa day, there’s no question of its importance. It’s a reminder of the African fight and commitment to break free from any form of dominance and to stand proud, that’s why Africa Day is celebrated in African as well as by Africans in the diaspora located mainly in North America, the US and Canada, and in Europe in the United Kingdom, France and Italy.

One Africa, One rate

African diaspora is one of the largest of the world, the need to communicate back home, to Africa, is a common need to many…and since Africa has united, International calling service Rebtel supports that unity offering one rate for the whole of Africa - only 5 cents/min – during this weekend and Africa Day!

Let’s celebrate Africa Day!! A reminder of power, pride and most of all that unity makes us stronger.
