Committee charged to investigate Asutsuare disturbances

Accra, Oct. 7, GNA - Sheikh Ibrahim Cudjoe Quaye, Greater Accra Regional Minister, on Tuesday inaugurated a three-member committee to enquire into the disturbances that occurred at Asutsuare in 2000. The committee, which has Mr Joseph Godson Amamoo, a Diplomat as the Chairman, was given eight weeks to present its report to President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Other members of the committee are Professor Ablade Glover, an Eminent Ghanaian Artist and Mr Daniel Owusu Nyampong, an Accra based legal practitioner, who is member secretary of the Committee. Inaugurating the Committee, Sheikh Quaye called for due diligence in the handling of matters of that nature.

"I believe strongly that all issues that will arise in the course of your investigations will be dealt with critically and objectively." Sheikh Quaye noted that the present conditions in the area were disheartening because on some occasions, violence erupted leading to the loss of life and property.

He said the matter was even worrying considering the complex and multifaceted nature of the supposed causes of the problem, which included disagreements on the management of the Kpong Irrigation Project, political differences and intolerance among the people and chieftaincy disputes.

He said the disturbances had been most unfortunate considering the enormous economic potential of the area and the benefits it could provide for the people.

Nene Klagbordjor Animle V, Paramount Chief of Shai Osudoku Traditional Area was grateful to President Kufuor for setting up the Committee.

He appealed to the people in the area to cooperate with the Committee in their assignment.
