British and Australian investors take over Konongo mines

Konongo (Ash), Aug 10, GNA - A British/Australian Company, Owereman Goldfield Limited, has started prospecting for gold at the abandoned Konongo Gold Mines.

Nana Batafo Akyeampong 11, the Konongohene, who announced this at Konongo said the Company had brought in heavy equipment and was carrying out the necessary diligent tests to ascertain the viability of the mines.

Nana Akyeampong was speaking during a meeting with Cardinal Peter Kwadwo Appiah Turkson, who was on an official tour of the Konongo/Mampong Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church.

He said since 1988, two companies, the Southern Cross Gold Mines and the Obenemase Mining Company prospected for the mineral at the mines but abandoned the project.

Nana Akyeampong appealed to Cardinal Turkson to separate Mampong diocese from Konongo, explaining that the plan has been on the drawing board for a long time.

Cardinal Turkson assured the chief that his request was been considered.
