Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are said to contribute at least 70% to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Exploring ways to expand this sector to create more job opportunities, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), Margaret Ansei, provided insights on GhanaWeb's BizTech, hosted by Sisl Prempeh.
According to her, the Ghana Enterprises Agency Act 1043 requires micro-business owners to employ at least five workers, while small enterprises employ between six and thirty people, and medium businesses employ between thirty-one and one hundred workers.
Margaret Ansei explained that GEA trains business owners in areas such as packaging and accessing markets to sell their products.
She stated that; "GEA teaches companies and organizations how to minimize waste. That is Kaizen, you minimize waste, then you maximize productivity. If you are able to do that, capital is not necessarily a requirement, and sometimes, you may have a hobby that you want to turn into a business."
"GEA provides grants to assist businesses not just by giving them money, but by training them. When we start working with you, we support you throughout the journey," she added.
Margaret Ansei noted that GEA's mandate is to promote and support the establishment of SMEs in Ghana.
