The Managing Director of the Cocoa Marketing Company (CMC), Dr Wisdom Kofi Dogbey, has emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between shipping lines and CMC to deepen business relationships and enhance the sustainability of the cocoa supply chain.
According to him, it is time for stakeholders to work together to accelerate the growth of Ghana's cocoa industry.
Delivering the keynote address at the Annual Cocoa Freight Negotiation Conference in Rouen, France, Dr Dogbey urged shipping lines to call at the Takoradi Port more frequently, leverage enhanced technology, and ensure the availability of food-grade containers to transport Ghana’s cocoa.
“We must work together to create a resilient framework that supports our farmers and ensures the continued success of the cocoa industry in Ghana,” he said.
Highlighting the critical role shipping lines play, Dr Dogbey further encouraged them to increase investments in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in Ghana.

“By supporting local communities, we can create a more equitable and sustainable cocoa industry, highlighting the potential positive impact on farmers and their communities,” he added.
Dr Dogbey also strongly opposed proposed increases in shipping rates.
Despite calls from several shipping lines for a rate hike, CMC’s position prevailed, resulting in an agreement to maintain current rates.
This outcome represents a major win for CMC and for Ghana, as it reduces operational costs and ensures Ghanaian cocoa remains competitive on the global market.
The decision to keep shipping rates unchanged reflects the strong partnerships and mutual respect CMC has cultivated within the industry. It also underscores the company’s commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s interests in cocoa exportation.
Taking advantage of the conference, Dr Dogbey also toured the production facility of a prominent chocolate manufacturer in France that sources Ghanaian cocoa beans.
The visit not only offered insights into the chocolate-making process but also reinforced the direct link between CMC and international buyers, highlighting the quality and value of Ghana’s cocoa.
