NPP commends EC

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has commended the Electoral Commission (EC) for exhibiting what it termed “a high level of professional neutrality” in conducting last Thursday’s presidential and parliamentary elections.

The Eastern Regional Secretary of the party, Mr S. M. Ahyiah, who said this at Koforidua on Monday, also congratulated the security agencies and the media for their roles in ensuring peaceful elections.

Speaking in an interview with the Graphic of the party’s position on the run-off of the presidential elections, Mr Ahyiah pointed out that the party respects the provisions of the Constitution and is, therefore, getting itself ready for the second round.

He, therefore, appealed to all party supporters and sympathisers to vote massively for Mr J. A. Kufour.

“The performance of the NPP in the first round was to show the ruling NDC a yellow card and in this run-off we will show them the red card”, the party secretary remarked.

In a related development, the Eastern Regional Minister, Ms Patience Adow, has called on supporters of all political parties in the region to exercise restraint and avoid all forms of intimidating acts against their opponents.

She expressed concern particularly about people in Effiduase and Asokore in the New Juabeng North Constituency some of whom have been allegedly harassing their political opponents and called on them not to allow party politics “to destroy the peace we have all prayed for”.

Ms Adow said the Constitution guarantees freedom of association and worship, hence it is illegal for anyone to harass or tease his or her political opponent whether he won or lost.
