Rawlings Vrs CID: Summary of Transcript

Fomer president J J Rawlings asked about the status of the investigations into the murder of 30 women in the run up to the 2000 elections. He was told by Mr Appeatu (CID) that the investigation were on going. Former president Rawlings then produced a copy of two files from the CID docket of files that clearly indicated that the case has been closed.

The second issue addressed was that of the request from the CID chief for a list of names that former president had indicated in a speech on the 4th of June 2003 that he had access to. The former president in his response to the request indicated he will be willing to proivde that list of names if those on the list and himself will be given a lie detector test as first approach towards establishing the truth of what he has provided.

In a response Mr Appeatu indicated that his unit was not in the position to give a lie detector test since they did not have the equipment. Former president Rawlings indicated that it is not beyond the police service to provide that facility since in their conviction of one Quansah, the police criminal docket clearly stated that Mr Quansah was administered a lie detector test.

Meanwhile during the meeting, the team from the CID was shown audio tape records of evidence that was collected during the NDC govt' investigations into these murders. These records include testimonies of over 200 retired and currently serving police officers and ordinary Ghanaians who were invloved in the investigations.

The former president asked if the CID could locate their copy of the said records since they were a part of the investigations at that time. Mr Appeatu replied in the negative indicating that he could not locate these records.

Finally, the former president indicated to the CID that when ever they are prepared to accede to his request of a lie detector test, he will be more than willing to provide them with a complete list of names of those involved in the murders of the 30 innocent Ghanaian women.
