Airtel advises cable thieves

Airtel Ghana, one of the leading telecommunications providers in the country, has advised criminals who steal and sell fiber cables of telecommunications companies to desist from such practice.

According to the company, fiber cables used by telecommunications companies do not contain copper.

Airtel said they contain glass, which serves as the medium for transmitting high-speed and high capacity data across the communication nodes.

The company therefore urged construction companies not to ignore the underground cables during the execution of projects.

Donald Gwira, Head of Corporate Communications and External Affair at Airtel, said the fiber cables provide the company with the backbone for its high 3G and 4G data traffic to customers.

He said regions and communities across the country were being connected through fiber optic cable in an effort to enhance broadband internet services.

However, network challenges occur due to fiber cuts through road construction and other development activities.

Mr. Gwira was speaking at the Airtel knowledge series on data and service held for media personnel in Accra.

He said the company engages the media who are not only partners but customers.

The programme was aimed at enhancing participants’ knowledge on Airtel’s data products and services.

Kojo Amoako, an official of Airtel’s Marketing Department, educated participants on the company’s processes.
