The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has announced that passenger train services on the Afienya–Tema Harbour and Afienya–Adome corridors will officially begin on October 1, 2025.

Chief Executive Officer of GRDA, Dr Frederick Appoh, confirmed the development in an interview with GHOne TV, noting that all defects and safety concerns along the lines have been addressed ahead of the rollout.

According to him, initial inspections revealed serious challenges, including defective point machines, missing interlocks, and removed bolts and nuts from sections of the tracks.

The Authority subsequently carried out comprehensive repairs and also resolved issues of illegal encroachment along the line.

To ensure safety, Dr Appoh said the GRDA conducted a rigorous four-day trial run on the Tema–Mpakadan line under varying conditions, including daytime, nighttime, and rainfall scenarios, to validate operational readiness.

“My job as a chief executive is to ensure that we run the train safely,” he stressed. “We needed to test operations under adverse conditions before opening to the public. I am happy to announce that on October 1, we will begin passenger service runs on the Tema to Adome corridor, with a 30-minute service from Afienya to Tema Harbour and another service from Afienya to Adome.”

The move marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to modernise its railway sector and expand safe, reliable passenger transport.
