Affordable housing must not be mistaken for low-quality housing – Minister

Ghana faces a staggering housing deficit of approximately 1.8 million units, a major concern for both citizens and the government.

To address this challenge, the government initiated the Affordable Housing Project to enable more young people and the middle class to purchase homes at accessible prices.

Speaking at the Africa Real Estate Conference and Expo in Accra on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, delivering a speech on behalf of the sector minister said affordable housing must not be mistaken for low-quality housing.

The minister stressed that housing units must be durable and meet the real needs of Ghanaians.

She urged real estate developers to embrace innovation across the housing value chain.

“Today, millions of Africans continue to live without access to adequate housing. In Ghana, the housing deficit remains a critical challenge. As we combine innovative thinking, modern technologies, and a shared commitment to lasting solutions, it is important to note that affordable housing must not be mistaken for low-quality housing,” she stated.

“It must be dignified, durable, and responsive to the everyday needs of our people. Our citizens deserve homes they can afford and communities where they can truly thrive,” she added.

The minister urged realtors to explore all aspects of the housing ecosystem including design, financing, maintenance, and facility management.

She noted that the use of smart technologies enables developers to design homes that are energy-efficient, climate-resilient, and space-optimised.

She further said that adopting cost-effective and sustainable construction methods such as compressed air flows, prefabricated components, and 3D-printed structures not only reduces the construction time and costs, but also minimises material waste while promoting quality and consistency across housing developments.
