Water shortage hits parts of Tamale Municipality

Tamale (Northern Region) 12 April '99

The Taha, Kula and Gburima-Wovogu electoral areas of the Tamale Municipality have been hit by a severe water shortage over the past two weeks. Residents have to travel several kilometres to look for water because all dugouts in the area are dried up.. Mr Ibrahim Anyas and Mr Salifu Ziblim, assembly members for Gburima-Wovogu and Kula, respectively, who disclosed this to the GNA in Tamale on Sunday, expressed fear that the situation could lead to the re-emergence of guinea worm and other water- borne diseases. They said the water shortage has come at a time the municipality is grappling with a cholera outbreak. Mr Anyas appealed to the Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation and private water tanker owners to supply water to the people. He also appealed to non-governmental organisations in the water sector to provide the communities with boreholes to ensure constant water supply.
