Fake Widow Nabbed

A 29-year-old woman’s desire to get rich overnight by posing as the wife of a deceased public servant failed to yield the needed results as she found her self in the grips of the law.

Cecilia Kakraba a Kumasi based businesswoman was said to have connived with two relatives of the deceased, John Marfo to withdraw eleven million cedis (about $1500) being his Social Security contributions.

The two, Albert Duku and Kofi Kyere are on the run as the police are looking for them.

According to Police Chief Inspector Regina Kesewa, Mr. Marfo died in August last year and the deceased’s brother, Duku went to the social Security and National Insurance Trust ( SSNIT) office at Adum in Kumasi the Ashanti regional capital to claim the benefits but was told that the beneficiaries were the deceased’ wife Christian Awuley and her three children.

He was asked to bring the wife along. Duku informed Kyere and they both contacted Cecilia who agreed to help them withdraw the money.

The three then went to the SSNIT office on April 12 this year where Cecilia posed as the widow of the late Marfo.

She managed to receive a cheque with the face value of $1500, which she withdrew. However on May 17, the real widow, Christina Awuley contacted the SSNIT office only to be told that the money had been paid out.

The case was then reported by the Benefits Officer, Mr. Owusu Boadi to the Kumasi Police Buffalo Unit who launched a thorough investigations leading to the arrest of Cecilia Kakraba on May 25.

Duku and Kyere however absconded on hearing the arrest of Cecilia.
