Afriwave Telecom Ghana Limited has expressed deep sorrow over the recent helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region, which claimed the lives of two Ministers of State, the Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, the Vice Chairman of the NDC, a former parliamentary candidate, and three servicemen.

In a statement, the company described the incident as “a heartbreaking loss” that has left “a profound void in the hearts of many across the nation and the diaspora.”

“The dedication and service of the fallen compatriots will be remembered with honour and gratitude,” the statement read, adding that their “legacies of leadership, commitment, and patriotism will continue to inspire solidarity.”

Afriwave extended condolences to the bereaved families, the Government, the Ghana Armed Forces, and all Ghanaians mourning the tragedy, praying for “strength, unity, and healing for all affected.”

The Z9 helicopter, carrying three crew members and five passengers, crashed in a dense forest while flying from the capital, Accra, to the town of Obuasi for an event aimed at tackling illegal mining. There were no survivors.

The bodies of the eight victims have been recovered from the crash site. The President confirmed that the flight data and cockpit voice recorders, often referred to as the “black boxes,” have been retrieved, and that the armed forces have initiated a full and transparent investigation.

Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science and Technology Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed were among those killed when the military aircraft went down in the central Ashanti Region.

Also among the dead were Ghana’s Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Agriculture Minister, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, and Samuel Sarpong, Vice-Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

A state funeral for the victims will be held on August 15, 2025.
