500 register for EXPO 2003

Accra, Aug. 20, GNA - More than 500 exhibitors and investors have registered to participate in the forthcoming EXPO 2003 scheduled for the UK from October 16-18, 2003.

The event, being organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Industries and Presidential Initiatives with Expo Events, UK seeks to highlight Ghanaian business and products, while promoting inter-regional trade.

Mr William Dorwokpor, National Coordinator of EXPO 2003 told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that, "when we add all the numbers we have from the regions, it is possible we might exceed the given figure."

He said, registration, travel documents as well as other relevant preparations are being processed, and he expressed the hope that documentation will be completed soon.

Mr Dorwokpor said the Secretariat is encouraged by the response of Small, Medium Enterprises (SME's) who, despite their nature and scope of business have the potential of becoming "world performers" considering the quality of what they turned out.

"Looking at the brochures and works of some of the SME's, I am inclined to believe that given a little push and exposure, they will actually make it on the world market and match the big names."

He explained that, "this is what the EXPO 2003 aims to achieve in providing a platform to expose Ghanaian business operators to their American, British and other European partners where they can exchange investment ideas and create partnerships."

The objective of the EXPO 2003 included presenting Ghana as a trade and investment Gateway to West Africa, establishing Ghana as a reliable supply source of raw materials, finished products and quality labour as well as positioning the country as a strong partner for development. "It is also meant to advertise Ghana's image with regard to trade and investment opportunities and growth potential."

A major feature of the event, Mr Dorwopkor said, "was the business and investment forum that would offer Ghanaian government, officials and entrepreneurs the opportunity to meet their counterparts from European, Asian and American business communities for interactions.

Business and investment seminars will be held concurrently at the Palace Suit of Alexander Palace during the exhibition.

He said a colourful durbar and a dinner dance would climax Ghana EXPO 2003 with a fundraising ceremony towards the Otumfuo's Educational Fund.
