Bodybuilding competition for 17 November 2001

This year's ‘Mr. Ghana Bodybuilding Competition’ would be held on 17 November 2001 at the National Theatre in Accra.

The competition, which is dubbed "Gladiators 2001 Awards", would feature 26 bodybuilders. The first three winners would be sent to the United Kingdom (UK) to participate in a similar competition by the Natural Amateur Body Building Association (NABBA) of the UK.

Mr Christian Hammond, Managing Director of Body Trading Company Limited, organisers of the competition, announced this on Friday 20 October 2001 at a media encounter to launch “Mr Ghana 2001”.

He said this year's competition would include fitness personality of the year. Under this category, prominent and busy personalities who, in spite of their busy schedule, still find at least an hour a day to keep fit either privately or at a gym, would be awarded.

Mr Hammond said with six body builders qualifying for the grand finale, the competition would demonstrate to the public that, " Body building is a portrayal and the foundation of all sports. It demonstrates the maximum strength and the flexibility of the body."

He said the company was working towards organising a West African Body Building Competition that would eventually lead to an African competition that is non-existence at the moment. He said the perception that food supplements are steroids was wrong and that they only serve as additional natural nutrients produced by the body.

Other sponsors of the competition are Budget Cash and Carry, Metro TV, Voltic Mineral Water, Accra Brewery Limited, Chicken Licking and La Palm Royal beach.
